Both Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake City have declared emergencies so the cities can better respond to the needs of citizens in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Utah on Wednesday morning.

“Signing this declaration will help us to ensure that Salt Lake City is able to access both state and federal funding that we might need in the wake of today’s earthquakes,” Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said.

South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood added, “It is the role of the City to keep our residents safe and healthy. This action will allow us to waive some procedural and purchasing requirements that give us the ability to acquire supplies and make decisions that protect our community.”
